Everyone should love carbs... Want to know why?

You’ll frequently find me touting the benefits of protein for competitive and recreational athletes, for weight loss, weight maintenance, as well as for those looking to increase their lean muscle mass and weight gain.

However, it’s also important to ensure you’re consuming enough carbohydrates throughout the day.

Here’s why:

  1. Energy Source: Carbohydrates are the body's primary source of energy. When consumed, they are broken down into glucose (sugar), which is used for fuel. This is particularly important for organs like the brain and muscles, which rely heavily on glucose for energy.

  2. Brain Function: Glucose, derived from carbohydrates, is the preferred energy source for the brain. Adequate carbohydrate intake ensures proper cognitive function (i.e. memory, attention, learning, processing speed) and supports overall brain health.

  3. Physical Performance: Carbs are essential for athletic performance and to sustain physical activity. They provide the energy needed for muscle contractions during exercise. Consuming carbs before, during, and after exercise can help optimize performance and support recovery needs.

  4. Metabolic Health: Carbohydrates play a role in regulating metabolism. Fiber, a type of carbohydrate found in plant foods, aids in digestion and helps regulate blood sugar levels. Consuming fiber-rich carbohydrates can reduce the risk of developing conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

  5. Nutrient Absorption: Carbs are often part of foods that contain essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. Consuming carbs from a variety of sources ensures a diverse intake of nutrients necessary for overall health.

While I love protein with every meal, I make sure I have some form of carb source for the reasons mentioned.

Everyone’s needs will look a little different, depending on whether you have performance or weight loss goals. Therefore, it’s important to ensure your diet reflects the goals you’re looking to achieve.
