Don't "major in the minors"

Seemingly everyday the “science” and experts change their mind around the effectiveness and beliefs surrounding nutrition, performance, recovery, and training.

Stretching used to prevent injuries, now it doesn’t.

Eat whole foods only, now just drink a powder instead.

Walk 10,000 steps per day, now just walk 8,000.

Throw your foam rollers away, wait, maybe they help somewhat.

Sauna, now cold plunge.

Laser therapy no longer works, but red light therapy does.

And the list goes on and on, enough to drive anyone crazy and leave you feeling stuck trying to find the next best thing.

What if I told you that this is a waste of time though?

These are what we like to call, the “minors”.

These are little things that provide small incremental changes, yet the importance media outlets place on them is high because it sounds cool, gets attention, and keeps people coming back for more updates.

When people invest time into figuring the minors out, they miss the bigger picture.

Physical and mental performance is always, time and again, based on the following first principles which have stood the rigors of time and examination.

Sleep 7 to 9 hours every day.

Eat a diet that includes lean proteins and a diverse array of fruits and veggies.

Drink water and keep your tissues hydrated.

Strength train and do some aerobic work for several days every week.

Surround yourself with people who support and help you grow.

Follow these guidelines and you will see improved performance in your life, in the pool, and in your health.

Choose to major in first principles rather then minor details and I promise you will come out a better athlete and a stronger human.
